Tetsujin 28-go, known abroad as Gigantor, is rendered here at an unusual 46 cm in soft vinyl and set on a purpose-built diorama base. The scale and the retro-style matte paintwork carry the figure out of the toy shelf and into the room as an interior object, readable even from across the space.
The Piece
Large soft vinyl figures of Tetsujin 28-go occupy a special tier in Japanese collecting culture. Oversized soft vinyl is produced in far lower quantities than small production toys because of mold cost, storage burden and display impracticality, and the figure sits in the collector territory between mass-market vinyl toys and sculpture. Paired with its diorama base, it crosses from toy into interior object.
Several layers make the piece work. At 46 cm the figure has architectural weight; the forward stride is the classic heroic Showa silhouette; and soft vinyl absorbs light differently from resin or metal, keeping the surface warm and nostalgic. The retro-style paintwork, in matte, period-correct tones, follows mid-century color memory rather than hyper-realism. It is the kind of object at home in a designer studio, a collector's living room, a boutique lobby or a Showa-themed interior.
