Murakami compresses his endless field of smiling flowers into a single sphere and places it in the arms of a panda child. The ED100 silkscreen holds pattern as object rather than environment, and this example remains unopened, preserved in its original box with full color stability.
The Piece
A playful yet structurally deliberate composition, the work shows a stylized panda figure embracing a densely packed sphere of Murakami's signature smiling flowers. Most Murakami flower works expand outward endlessly; here the system is compressed into a contained spherical mass, held, embraced and controlled. Instead of being immersed in pattern, the viewer observes pattern as object, and the shift introduces control and focus within the visual plane.
The panda introduces softness and accessibility, humanizing the composition and keeping the flower mass from becoming purely decorative. The act of hugging transforms the sphere from structure into something cared for and protected: Murakami inserting affection into repetition. Rendered in deeper, earth-toned shading, the panda grounds a sphere that explodes with high-saturation color, a duality between stability and chaos in which the figure holds together what would otherwise disperse.
Murakami's Superflat philosophy usually removes hierarchy; here hierarchy returns through form, with the sphere as a centralized unit of repetition and the character defining spatial dominance. Executed in silkscreen, the print keeps clarity across its layered colors and a clean distinction between figure and floral mass, making the work easy to read and adaptable in display compared with full-field compositions. It offers an accessible Murakami entry with strong visual identity, combining character-driven appeal, floral recognition and balanced rarity: not a flagship work, but a reliable and visually strong one.
