Rare Tailor Toyo Military Pin-Up Souvenir Jacket • “Texas Kate” 8148th AC&W SQDN • Eagle & 5th Air Force Insignia • Reversible Pink Japan Dragon • TT11382 • Size S

A Remarkable Collision of Postwar Americana and Japanese Souvenir-Jacket Art 🇯🇵🦅🐉

Few sukajan designs capture the strange, fascinating visual crossroads of postwar Japan quite as completely as this one.

This vintage Tailor Toyo TT11382 reversible souvenir jacket presents two radically different personalities within a single garment.

On one side is an extravagant military-inspired navy and champagne-gold satin jacket, dominated by an embroidered pin-up cowgirl identified as “TEXAS KATE,” surrounded by the designation “8148TH AC&W SQDN”, a large stylized numeral 5, military-style insignia, an eagle and arrow-shaped pocket accents.

Turn the jacket inside out and the military imagery disappears almost completely.

The reverse becomes a wonderfully unusual dusty pink / lavender and deep navy quilted sukajan, with floral chest embroidery and an enormous mint-green dragon emerging through stylized clouds beneath a bold embroidered JAPAN.

It is precisely this transformation that makes reversible sukajan so compelling: one side feels like a personalized American serviceman souvenir, while the other returns immediately to the fantastical Japanese dragon imagery that has become inseparable from the genre.

Side A: “Texas Kate” 8148th AC&W Squadron

The principal navy side has the atmosphere of an embroidered military souvenir jacket crossed with mid-century American pin-up art.

A lustrous midnight / royal navy body is paired with contrasting champagne-gold sleeves and coordinating double racing stripes running along the raglan shoulders and arms.

The result is immediately eye-catching without resorting to the more familiar tiger-and-dragon arrangement seen on many sukajan.

The real centerpiece is the enormous back composition.

“8148TH AC&W SQDN”

Across the upper back appears the embroidered designation:

8148TH AC&W SQDN

The abbreviation AC&W is historically associated with Aircraft Control & Warning terminology, giving the design a distinctly Cold War-era U.S. military aviation flavor.

Rather than presenting the military reference in a severe or documentary way, Tailor Toyo combines it with playful pin-up art, souvenir embroidery and Americana graphics.

That contrast is exactly what gives this jacket its personality.

Texas Kate 🤠

At the center sits the wonderfully eccentric embroidered figure:

TEXAS KATE

She is depicted as a smiling cowgirl-style pin-up seated across a large stylized numeral 5, wearing:

a blue cowboy hat,
red neckwear,
western-style clothing,
high blue boots,
and a confidently theatrical pin-up pose.

One hand points outward while the other raises a boot.

The composition feels almost like a hand-painted nose-art panel transferred onto satin through embroidery.

Below and around her appears the inscription:

TEXAS 5 KATE

creating one of the more unusual Tailor Toyo back designs for collectors who already own the conventional dragon, tiger and eagle jackets.

The Number “5”

The large numeral 5 serves as a powerful visual anchor.

Inside and around it are military-style graphics and stars, including a circular aircraft-style insignia motif.

The same “5” graphic returns on the front chest, tying the front and back into a coherent military-souvenir composition.

Eagle Chest Embroidery 🦅

The opposite chest carries a beautifully rendered flying eagle.

Its wings are spread dramatically, embroidered predominantly in pale silver-white thread.

Because the eagle is relatively restrained in scale, it works almost like a military patch rather than overwhelming the front.

Together, the eagle and number 5 make the front recognizable even before the jacket is turned around to reveal Texas Kate.

Arrow Pocket Details

Another excellent little design touch appears at the welt pockets.

Small arrow-shaped embroidered accents point toward the pocket openings.

They are subtle, almost hidden beneath the larger graphics, but they give the jacket the sort of layered detailing that becomes more interesting the longer you examine it.

Navy & Champagne-Gold Satin

The colors are particularly good.

Instead of ordinary black, the main body uses a rich blue with considerable sheen.

The sleeves contrast in a warm ivory / champagne / pale-gold tone.

This creates an unmistakable vintage-Americana palette, especially when combined with the striped ribbing.

The satin surface catches changing light beautifully and gives the embroidered artwork considerable dimensionality.

Striped Raglan Sleeve Construction

The sleeves feature long contrasting stripes extending from the collar area toward the cuffs.

These stripes amplify the athletic bomber silhouette while giving the jacket something of a vintage team-jacket or racing-jacket quality.

That visual language fits especially well with the military insignia and Americana imagery.

Side B: Pink Japan Dragon 🐉🌸

Flip the jacket and the entire narrative changes.

The reverse abandons the blue, cream and military imagery for a wonderfully unexpected combination of:

dusty lavender-pink satin
deep navy quilted sleeves
mint green dragon embroidery
pastel flowers
yellow JAPAN lettering

The mood becomes softer, stranger and unmistakably Japanese.

Quilted Pink Body

The reverse body is finished with diamond quilting.

This produces a padded geometric background across the pink satin, giving the dragon embroidery additional depth.

The navy sleeves are similarly quilted, creating a continuous diamond-grid structure across most of this side.

It is particularly striking because the quilting is not merely functional.

It becomes part of the graphic language of the jacket.

Floral Chest Embroidery 🌸

Two compact floral arrangements appear symmetrically across the chest.

They combine soft:

pink,
lavender,
yellow,
blue-green,
and cream threads.

Against the dusty pink body, the flowers feel almost delicate.

This restrained front offers no hint of the enormous creature waiting on the reverse back.

JAPAN Dragon Back

Across the shoulders appears:

JAPAN

embroidered in warm golden-yellow lettering.

Directly below emerges a massive dragon head.

Its palette is exceptionally unusual:

mint / turquoise green
pale lavender
soft pink
yellow horns
red mouth and tongue
cream outlines

Cloud forms surround the dragon, visually extending the composition across the quilted surface.

This is not the conventional gold dragon on black satin.

The pastel coloration gives the motif an almost dreamlike quality.

The Japanese Dragon

The dragon is unmistakably the visual star of this side.

Large staring eyes, curling whiskers, horns, flowing mane and an open mouth create the exaggerated expression associated with vintage souvenir-jacket imagery.

Its mint-green face contrasts brilliantly against the lavender ground.

What makes the design especially appealing is that it does not attempt visual realism.

It embraces embroidery as graphic art.

The dragon almost floats above the diamond quilting like an illustrated apparition.

Two Completely Different Jackets

This is not simply a reversible jacket where one side changes color.

Each side has its own identity.

Side A

Navy satin
Champagne-gold sleeves
Texas Kate pin-up
8148th AC&W SQDN lettering
Eagle
Number 5 insignia
Military-Americana styling

Side B

Dusty pink / lavender quilted satin
Deep navy sleeves
Floral chest motifs
Large pastel dragon
Clouds
JAPAN lettering
Classic Japanese souvenir imagery

The transformation is substantial enough that each orientation could easily be mistaken for a separate jacket.

Tailor Toyo TT11382

The original label clearly identifies this example as:

TAILOR TOYO

with the distinctive embroidered label incorporating:

東洋
Mt. Fuji
cherry blossoms
torii gate imagery

The attached care label further identifies:

TT11382

and states:

表地:ポリエステル 100%
Shell: Polyester 100%

裏地:ポリエステル 100%
Reverse / lining: Polyester 100%

The jacket is tagged:

Size S

These surviving original labels are particularly useful on vintage-style reversible jackets because they firmly establish the Toyo Enterprise production and model designation.

A Different Kind of Sukajan

Most collectors first encounter souvenir jackets decorated with the familiar triumvirate of:

tiger,
dragon,
and eagle.

This jacket goes considerably further.

The dragon remains on one side, preserving the visual vocabulary of the classic sukajan.

But the Texas Kate side introduces a completely different branch of souvenir-jacket imagery: U.S. military unit references, aviation culture, American pin-up illustration and serviceman nostalgia.

That makes TT11382 especially interesting for a collection already containing more conventional designs.

Military Aviation Influence

The 8148TH AC&W SQDN inscription gives the jacket an unmistakably aviation-related character.

The eagle, numerical insignia, stars and military-inspired graphics deepen that association.

Rather than looking like a generic reproduction bomber, however, the imagery has been filtered through Japanese souvenir embroidery.

That intersection is the soul of the design.

Japanese embroidery interprets American military iconography, then the jacket reverses into a Japanese dragon.

Two postwar visual worlds occupy the same garment.

Pin-Up & Nose-Art Spirit

Texas Kate strongly recalls the tradition of personalizing military aircraft and equipment with illustrated female figures, nicknames and playful mascots.

Rather than reproducing a severe military uniform, the artwork celebrates the human, humorous and individual side of serviceman culture.

The oversized embroidered cowgirl therefore functions almost as wearable nose art.

It transforms the back of the jacket into a portable painted aircraft panel, only executed in thread.

Why Collectors Love This Type of Piece

For the serious sukajan collector, unusual subject matter often becomes increasingly important.

There are countless excellent tigers.

There are countless dragons.

There are countless eagles.

A fully reversible Tailor Toyo combining:

military squadron imagery

Western pin-up art

Texas iconography

eagle imagery

aviation-style insignia

pastel Japanese dragon embroidery

quilted satin construction

occupies a much narrower lane.

That visual specificity gives TT11382 considerably more personality than a generic souvenir jacket.

Color Story

Even the color choices help tell the two-sided narrative.

Military Side

Navy blue
Champagne gold
Red
White
Powder blue
Muted pink

The palette feels patriotic and Americana-inflected without simply using red, white and blue.

Dragon Side

Dusty lavender-pink
Midnight navy
Mint green
Turquoise
Yellow
Soft purple
Cream

The reverse almost feels like Japanese fantasy illustration translated into embroidery.

Period Character

This is an earlier Tailor Toyo production rather than one of the company's current-season releases.

The TT11382 model number, labeling style and construction all contribute to its archive appeal.

Because an exact production year has not been conclusively established from the supplied photographs alone, this listing deliberately avoids assigning an unsupported specific date.

It is best appreciated as an older Tailor Toyo archive / vintage-era reversible sukajan with strong period character.

Condition

This is a genuine pre-owned garment with visible vintage wear and age-related character.

The photographs show noticeable patina and discoloration particularly across portions of the light champagne-colored sleeves, together with natural wrinkling, textile variation and general wear associated with previous use and storage.

The satin surfaces display the characteristic creasing and tonal variation expected from an older reversible souvenir jacket.

These elements are part of the actual condition of the garment and should be considered before purchase.

Please examine all photographs closely, as they provide the best record of the jacket's current appearance.

For collectors who enjoy naturally aged sukajan, the wear gives the piece considerable lived-in character rather than the pristine appearance of a modern retail reproduction.

Size & Fit

Tagged Size: S

Vintage Japanese sizing frequently runs differently from modern Western sizing, so the tagged letter should not be treated as a guaranteed contemporary international equivalent.

Please compare garment measurements carefully with a jacket that already fits you well.

The overall silhouette follows the traditional sukajan formula:

short bomber body,
raglan shoulders,
ribbed collar,
ribbed cuffs,
ribbed waistband,
and moderate volume through the sleeves.

Wearable Art

There are garments that merely carry decoration.

A jacket like this uses the entire garment as a canvas.

The back of each side functions almost like a textile poster:

one telling an eccentric American military story through Texas Kate,

the other presenting a fantastical Japanese dragon floating through clouds.

Placed on a wall, mannequin or display form, either side is strong enough to function as decorative textile art.

Styling

Texas Kate Side

Pair with:

raw indigo denim,
white T-shirt,
engineer boots,
vintage sneakers,
military chinos,
or simple black trousers.

Let the embroidery provide the color.

Dragon Side

The pastel reverse works brilliantly against:

black denim,
dark indigo,
cream trousers,
burgundy,
and monochrome outfits.

The unusual lavender-and-mint palette gives this side a much more fashion-forward character than the stereotypical black-and-gold sukajan.

For the Collector

This jacket crosses several collecting categories at once:

Japanese vintage fashion,
sukajan,
military-inspired apparel,
aviation imagery,
Americana,
pin-up art,
Japanese embroidery,
Tailor Toyo,
Toyo Enterprise,
and archive streetwear.

That crossover appeal is precisely what makes unusual Tailor Toyo designs so enjoyable to hunt.

Purchase, Shipping & Vintage Policy

Please review all photographs carefully before purchase. Photographs form an important part of the item's condition record.

This is a pre-owned vintage / collectible garment offered as-is. Natural textile aging, satin creasing, discoloration, marks, minor thread irregularities, rib wear and other characteristics associated with age, storage and previous use may be present.

Because vintage Japanese clothing can fit differently from contemporary international sizing, please compare measurements with a garment that fits you well before ordering.

Preparation, shipping and handling normally takes 5–10 business days or earlier.

Worldwide shipping is normally provided through EMS or another appropriate tracked international service, depending on destination and logistical requirements.

Tracking information will be provided following dispatch.
