The Piece

Released in 2017, the Supreme × Louis Vuitton collection brought together two visual systems once thought almost incompatible: Louis Vuitton's historic Monogram and Supreme's uncompromising New York graphic identity. The collaboration debuted in the Louis Vuitton Men's Fall/Winter 2017 season under Kim Jones, carrying Supreme imagery directly into the house's luxury vocabulary across luggage, leather goods, ready-to-wear, footwear, accessories and objects, all united by Supreme red, the Monogram and co-branded detailing. The Baseball Gloves belonged to that original 2017 offering and originally retailed at US$875.

The backs of the hands are covered in oversized cream-white Louis Vuitton motifs set against the saturated red ground: LV initials, quatrefoil flowers, rounded floral motifs and diamond-shaped Monogram flowers. Enlarged almost to the point of graphic abstraction, the repeat is cropped and broken across the fingers, so the whole is never seen at once; part flower, part LV, partial motif and interrupted shape, the composition changes with every position of the hand. On a trunk the Monogram reads as history; across five fingers in bright red leather it reads almost as rebellion.

The cuffs carry the clearest Supreme signature. Each wrist is finished with a rectangular Supreme patch set into a contrasting natural-toned leather frame, placed deliberately where it stays visible when worn and marking the transition from the red leather body to the ribbed wrist. Despite the name, these are not fielding mitts: the design is closer to a fitted leather sporting glove, drawing on athletic and baseball language through its ribbed cuffs, leather body and articulated fingers, and it sits between sports accessory, luxury leather good, streetwear artifact and design object.

The red leather gives the gloves a character quite unlike Supreme's textile accessories, with natural grain and flexibility, reinforced seams articulating each finger, tonal stitching and a structured wrist opening.
