Koi on one face, dragons on the other: this Satori reversible sukajan stages the legend of the carp that becomes a dragon, moving from a quiet black-and-ivory water garden under sakura to a bronze field of twin ryū coiling through waves and clouds.
The Piece
Satori is known among Japanese embroidered-streetwear enthusiasts for pushing wagara, tattoo and folklore motifs far beyond small souvenir graphics, and this size L reversible jacket shows why. Its embroidery is integrated across the garment, from chest to back on both faces, in a restrained palette of black, ivory, champagne, bronze, taupe, silver-gray and muted brown that lets density, movement and texture carry the drama.
Side A pairs a black satin-style body with champagne-ivory sleeves, black sleeve striping and black, cream and muted gray ribbing. Sakura in ivory, pale gray, dusty blue-gray, soft blush and muted pink cascade across the viewer’s left chest, some fully open, some scattered as petals, while a large koi in ivory, charcoal and silver-gray with carefully repeated scales emerges from the lower opposite front, swimming through curved water lines. On the back, two giant koi follow opposing curves through embroidered streams, one above and one below, among cherry blossoms, falling petals, ripples, curling currents and stylized splashes, like a tattoo back piece translated into thread.
Side B turns bronze. The satin ground shifts between bronze, tobacco brown, antique gold, copper and muted olive-brown, and enormous gray, ivory and charcoal dragons fill the garment. On the front, two dragon bodies extend across both chest panels from shoulders to lower body, with scaled torsos, clawed feet, whiskers, horns, expressive eyes, open mouths and flowing facial hair; divided by the zipper, they appear to converge when the jacket is closed. On the back, one dragon descends from above while a second rises from below, surrounded by turbulent waves, foam, clouds and atmospheric scroll forms, the scales textured and outlined in darker thread against the bronze.
The pairing is unusually coherent. Koi stand for endurance, determination, courage, transformation, prosperity, advancement and resilience, and in East Asian legend a carp that overcomes the currents and ascends the Dragon Gate becomes a dragon. Sakura add beauty, renewal and transience, the mono no aware of a brief flowering. The ryū, linked with water, rain, rivers, seas, storms, protection, wisdom, authority and transformation, belongs to the waves that surround it. Turning the jacket from one face to the other enacts that metamorphosis.
Hung from the black side, the koi form a sweeping water composition; hung from the bronze side, the dragons recall an embroidered folding screen. The restrained palette suits black or raw indigo denim with the koi face and faded selvedge, black trousers or military chinos with the dragon face.
