The Real McCoy’s 1990 A-2 “Hot Blooded Mustang” Back-Painted Horsehide Flight Jacket, 10 of 29, Size 36

An early Real McCoy’s A-2 from 1990, one of only 29, numbered 10 and signed by the artist Okamoto. The hand-painted “Hot Blooded Mustang” P-51 crosses a horsehide back, and the jacket survives as deadstock with its original box, tags and paperwork.

The Piece

An early-production Real McCoy’s A-2 in horsehide, issued in 1990 as part of a strictly limited series of 29 examples and featuring a hand-painted “Hot Blooded Mustang” P-51 motif across the reverse. It retains its original packaging, tags and documentation and bears the artist’s signature, Okamoto, together with serial numbering: 10 of 29. Made in the brand’s early golden age, before the split and before global expansion, it belongs less to the history of military clothing than to the history of reproduction itself.

Electric, kinetic “Hot Blooded Mustang” lettering crowns the back. Below it a carefully rendered P-51 Mustang slices through space as though mid-escort over Europe, and beneath runs a scroll of victory markings in iron-cross form, stylized and almost theatrical. The artist’s signature and the serial identity complete a piece of numbered storytelling rather than mass production.

The horsehide is classic early McCoy’s: dense but not overly corrected, deep brown with a natural gloss bloom, and barely broken in thanks to its deadstock state. The construction shows early-era stitch discipline, slightly more human than later perfectionist runs, correct A-2 geometry and pocket shaping true to the Rough Wear lineage.

1990 predates broad international awareness of the Japanese reproduction houses. The Real McCoy’s was then obsessed, experimental and uncompromising, and a run of 29 reflected what could be made at that level rather than marketing. Early production, an ultra-low edition, a preserved serial, deadstock condition, full original packaging and documents and signed artwork together move the jacket from vintage clothing into collector archive object: a time capsule opened after more than thirty years.
