Football fever, Punk Drunkers style: a reversible sukajan made for the 2010 tournament in South Africa, with a different nation on each face. Blue and white for Japan, with an armored samurai, Mount Fuji and Ultras lettering; yellow, green and black for Bafana Bafana, with vuvuzela-wielding fans and a map of the host country.
The Piece
A wonderfully eccentric reversible sukajan created around the 2010 South Africa football tournament, this jacket turns one garment into two wildly different supporter uniforms. Founded in 1998, Punk Drunkers describes its creative philosophy as “Japanese + Western + Fun” and “Uncool is Cool,” an approach embodied by this exuberant crossover of football culture, souvenir-jacket construction and comic illustration.
The blue-and-white Japan side centers on an armored samurai standing over a football above the embroidered outline of the Japanese archipelago. The back incorporates the samurai warrior in black armor with a rising-sun breastplate, the football beneath his foot, a green map of Japan, Mount Fuji, white “Japan” script, the number 12, and vertical red lettering reading ウルトラス参上, all within a bold blue, white and red national color architecture. The front continues with a shield-style JPN crest, a dark bird emblem and a roaring character surrounded by blue flames, while oversized sleeve lettering reads PUNK DRUNKERS and ULTRAS, turning the jacket into a panoramic piece of supporter art.
Reversed, the jacket takes on the vivid yellow, green and black of South African football. Its back carries “Bafana Bafana” lettering, three illustrated supporters holding vuvuzelas, the South African flag, the number 12, a map of South Africa with host-city references including Cape Town, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Durban, and commemorative “South Africa 2010” embroidery. The front bears a roaring lion crest and an embroidered South African flag, and black sleeve stripes with coordinated striped ribbing sharpen the athletic silhouette. The reversible zipper lets either side serve as the exterior, giving two complete jackets rather than a decorative lining.
The jacket connects several collecting worlds at once: Japanese cult streetwear, Punk Drunkers design, 2010 football history, Japan supporter culture, South African football imagery and Bafana Bafana memorabilia, reversible sukajan construction, samurai and Mount Fuji iconography, Harajuku and Amekaji fashion, and tournament and soccer collecting. Its two-nation format gives it broader appeal than a conventional team bomber, while the comic embroidery and saturated palette are unmistakably Punk Drunkers.
