🧠 LOT ENTRY
Drummer Boy Figure
Japan, pre-war period (circa 1920s–1930s)
Celluloid, tin mechanism, textile costume, wooden base
This pre-war Japanese wind-up figure depicts a ceremonial drummer boy, standing upright upon a wooden base and animated by an internal spring-driven mechanism. When activated, the figure’s arms articulate rhythmically against the drum, evoking both military cadence and festival performance traditions common to early twentieth-century Japan.
The head is formed in molded and painted celluloid, exhibiting the soft facial modeling and warm expression characteristic of the Taisho–early Showa transition period. The costume is composed of period textile elements, retaining strong color and form, while the drum is suspended naturally from the figure’s body, reinforcing the sense of upright balance and ritual stance.
Unlike wheeled toys or novelty figures, standing drummer figures required careful weight distribution and durable construction, contributing to their limited production and high attrition rate. Surviving examples with intact costumes, original base, and functioning wind-up action are increasingly scarce.
This piece belongs to a refined class of pre-war Japanese mechanical figures in which toy-making intersected with performance, ceremony, and early kinetic design.
