From the 2012 Louis Vuitton × Yayoi Kusama collaboration, this Neverfull MM M40686 turns the maison's classic Monogram tote into a hypnotic field of red and black dots moving in sweeping wave-like bands. It predates the 2023 re-edition and belongs to an important earlier chapter in the house's artist-collaboration history.
The Piece
At first glance the bag is unmistakably a Neverfull MM: brown Monogram canvas, natural leather handles, gold-tone hardware and the flexible tote architecture are all present. Across that familiar foundation, Kusama's repetitive red-dot pattern bends, expands and contracts into rhythmic geometric waves, so the piece reads less as a printed tote than as an optical surface wrapped around a functional luxury object.
Founded in Paris in 1854, Louis Vuitton built its reputation on travel trunks, luggage and disciplined leather-goods construction, and its Monogram of LV initials, floral forms and quatrefoils became one of the most recognizable visual systems in luxury fashion. In the modern era the house began to treat the Monogram as a creative surface as well as branding, inviting major contemporary artists to interrupt, repaint, enlarge or distort its icons while the underlying object remained intact. The Kusama collaboration is one of the clearest expressions of that philosophy. Kusama is internationally associated with repeated dots, infinity fields and immersive environments, a vocabulary of repetition, accumulation and visual rhythm that the 2012 collection translated into fashion and leather goods.
Model M40686 is specifically associated with the Monogram Wave Neverfull MM and is still identified in secondary-market references as the 2012 Kusama Monogram Wave Neverfull MM. Unlike the 2023 collaboration, where dots and pumpkins often sit as individual motifs, this earlier design integrates the dot pattern into the entire architecture of the bag. The dots expand dramatically across diagonal bands, then shrink into tighter formations, creating the illusion of waves sweeping across the body, while sections of traditional Monogram remain exposed between them. The oversized red circles carry the strongest impact and the smaller dot fields generate movement and texture; from a distance the bag reads almost as geometric abstraction, and up close the Monogram comes forward beneath the composition.
The palette is deliberately concentrated: brown Monogram canvas as foundation, bright red dominating the overlay, dark brown and black accents for depth, warm tan natural leather and restrained gold-tone hardware. Natural leather forms the handles, upper trim and side laces, contrasting strongly with the graphic red-and-brown body. The red textile lining, patterned with small dark dots, carries the chromatic concept inside, so the design feels cohesive rather than externally decorated, and a zippered interior pocket separates small personal items. The open main compartment comfortably holds a wallet, cosmetics, phone, small tablet, notebook and other daily essentials, while the side laces draw the silhouette inward or leave it open.
The Neverfull MM is one of Louis Vuitton's most practical tote formats, offering meaningful space without becoming oversized, suited to daily use, work, travel, shopping, collector display and art-fashion wardrobes. Because it belongs to the first major Kusama collaboration, the M40686 is significantly more collectible than a standard Neverfull MM, and the 2012 collection has moved firmly into archival territory. With so much energy in the pattern, it is best styled with restraint: black tailoring, white shirts, cream knitwear, denim, camel outerwear, minimal dresses, dark navy, leather jackets and neutral travel wardrobes.
