Louis Vuitton × Yayoi Kusama Pumpkin Bag M21761, Sculptural Silver Leather with Multicolor Monogram

One of the most sculptural handbags of the 2023 Louis Vuitton x Yayoi Kusama collaboration, M21761 turns Kusama's signature pumpkin into the bag itself. Ribbed silver leather carries multicolor Monogram flowers and initials beneath a sculptural stem closure, and this unused, rank S example arrives with original box, dust bag and shoulder strap.

The Piece

Unlike a conventional handbag silhouette, the piece is built almost as a three-dimensional art object. Its body is segmented into rounded vertical leather panels that curve outward before returning toward the base, mimicking the natural ribbing of a pumpkin and the swollen geometry of Kusama's pumpkin sculptures, while the compact circular footprint gives it an architectural presence. From the front it appears compact and rounded, from an angle the pleated structure becomes apparent, and from above the closure and segmented body read as a miniature pumpkin translated into leatherwork.

Louis Vuitton, founded in Paris in 1854, reunited with Kusama in 2023 for an expansive second collaboration, more than a decade after their first major partnership, bringing Infinity Dots, painted dots, flowers and pumpkins into the house's universe. The Pumpkin Bag is among its most literal exchanges: rather than applying a print to an existing silhouette, the object itself becomes the motif. Silhouette, volume, closure, color and ornament all serve one concept, which places it closer to a limited design object than a seasonal print. The pumpkin has appeared throughout Kusama's career in paintings, sculptures, installations and public artworks; here its segments become pleated leather, its stem the closure and its body the storage volume.

The metallic silver leather, with embossed Monogram detailing and multicolor printing, acts as a neutral but luminous ground for Monogram flowers and LV initials in red, yellow, blue, green and white, which shift as the bag turns. Silver creates distance from traditional brown Monogram and lends a futuristic, museum-object quality. Rising above the body, the narrow stem-like closure is decorated with colorful dot and Monogram details and finished with a green circular top, turning the fastening into the visual crown of the bag.

Construction includes structured leather paneling, reinforced panel seams, a textile-lined interior and a detachable silver-tone shoulder chain; the rounded form demands more structural engineering than a flat-sided bag so that the pumpkin volume holds. Its dimensions place it in a compact-to-medium range, though the near-spherical form gives far more visual volume than the numbers suggest, and it holds its presence as readily in a collector cabinet, designer archive or contemporary-art interior as on the shoulder.
