Louis Vuitton × Takashi Murakami Speedy 35 M95773, Monogramouflage Camouflage Canvas, 2008

Monogram was made to be recognized; camouflage was made to disappear. Takashi Murakami's 2008 Monogramouflage sets the two against each other on a Speedy 35, olive, khaki and forest green over the LV pattern, cut by black webbing bands. This vintage example has honest patina and keeps its padlock, key and name tag.

The Piece

Takashi Murakami's partnership with Louis Vuitton changed the course of luxury collaboration because he kept reinterpreting the house's own codes: Multicolore, Cherry Blossom, Panda, Cerises, character graphics and Superflat flowers. Monogramouflage, introduced in 2008, is his most utilitarian departure. Instead of brightening the Monogram, he partly conceals it inside an irregular camouflage field, a darker and more militaristic mood than most of his Louis Vuitton work.

Olive, khaki, sand beige, dark forest green and brown move across the familiar LV initials and Monogram Flowers. From a distance the bag reads as camouflage; at closer range the pattern resurfaces, and neither system quite wins. Two vertical black textile bands run down front and back, recalling military straps, webbing and field bags, and divide the irregular field graphically. Because the camouflage tones sit close to the traditional Monogram ground, the blend is subtler than on Murakami's saturated collections.

The base is the Speedy 35: rounded Boston silhouette, dual rolled natural cowhide handles with leather chapes, zip-top closure, gold-tone hardware, padlock system and a large single compartment with an interior pocket. On this example the vachetta has developed a warm, darkened patina that suits the earthy palette and reinforces the bag's field-equipment character, and it remains a fully functional Speedy.

Condition

• Good usable vintage condition with visible chronology, not a near-unused example. The Monogramouflage surface remains strongly legible and the body keeps its recognizable Speedy profile despite some natural softening.
