Louis Vuitton Les Extraordinaires City Steamer, Moka Embossed Monogram Calfskin with Black Alligator, 2006

Not the later City Steamer of the modern line but its rare forebear: a 2006 Les Extraordinaires bag in which deep moka calfskin, embossed with the Monogram, gathers into sculptural folds beneath a rigid frame and rolled handles of glossy black alligator. It originally retailed at around $14,000, the top of that collection, and this example is rank A.

The Piece

During the Marc Jacobs years Louis Vuitton repeatedly pulled the Monogram away from brown coated canvas, into denim, patent leather, metallic finishes, embroidery, fur and multicolor printing. The Les Extraordinaires / Embossed Leather pieces of the mid-2000s pushed it into exceptionally luxurious materials and unusual construction, and period references place the brown City Steamer with crocodilian trim at the very top of the 2006 embossed-leather offerings, alongside the Alizee, Polly and Stephen. Its extravagance comes entirely from material and construction: no cartoons, no pop graphics, no neon.

The lower body is supple moka calfskin with the LV initials and flowers pressed into the leather rather than printed, so the Monogram behaves like texture, sharp in one fold and lost in the next. Above it, the upper panels, rolled handles and trim are glossy black alligator, identified in archival references for surviving examples as Alligator mississippiensis. Soft matte calfskin against structured, reflective exotic leather gives the bag an almost couture tension between softness and control.

Deep pleating gathers the lower body into volume at the sides and a narrower center, so its width and depth change with how it rests; that variability is the architecture, not an error. The rigid circular handles lend a valise-like posture, a horizontal strap arrangement with gold-tone hardware crosses the front, and a classic brass padlock hangs at the center, an almost equestrian composition of belts, buckles, leather and brass. The interior is restrained, with one internal pocket.
