The Piece

The Horizon's conical silhouette is drawn from Louis Vuitton's Toupie handbag, giving the device the look of a futuristic spinning top or polished mechanical sculpture. Placed upright on its charging dock it works as a 360-degree room speaker; laid on its side it becomes directional and projects sound toward the listener. Switched off, it reads as an interior object. Switched on, 35 integrated LEDs around the top and middle rings animate Louis Vuitton lettering and Monogram Flower motifs in time with the audio, so a logo normally printed, embossed or woven becomes light.

The exterior is a nocturnal reading of the house vocabulary: black Monogram treatment with LV initials, Monogram Flowers and embossed patterning, dark leather detailing and polished metal accents. Period specifications describe the materials as stainless steel, tempered glass and cowhide leather with integrated lighting and electronics, a mixture that explains its presence on a shelf, console, desk or bedside table. The sculpted black travel case mirrors the speaker's unusual outline, a quiet nod to the Maison's long history of carrying precious objects.

Beneath the styling is a dedicated wireless audio system: two 0.75-inch tweeters, one 3-inch woofer and 2 × 30W amplification, Bluetooth 5.1, Apple AirPlay 2 and QPlay connectivity, three integrated microphones that also allow speakerphone use, and battery playback of up to approximately 15 hours under suitable conditions. Launched internationally in July 2021, it originally retailed at $2,890 in the United States and ¥352,000 in Japan, and placed Louis Vuitton in the connected-device market alongside its Horizon watches and wireless earphones.

Connected electronics belong to a specific moment of hardware and software, which makes first-generation luxury technology such as the QAC000 increasingly interesting as design artifacts.
