The Piece

The Elephantasy Trunk is one of the most unusual contemporary expressions of Louis Vuitton's hardsided tradition. Rather than adapting trunk construction to a conventional rectangle, the house makes the basic form the body of an elephant. A rounded natural cowhide ear overlaps the Monogram body, the curved trunk descends toward the base, a single riveted stud forms the eye, four compact feet support the rectangular body, and the arched leather handle rises above the back like another sculptural element.

The main body is wrapped in classic brown Monogram coated canvas, with its LV initials, quatrefoil, rounded and diamond-form flowers. The rigid construction keeps the canvas taut, so the pattern reads with architectural clarity: the Monogram becomes part of the structure. The cowhide ear, a material bound up with the house's luggage heritage, here becomes anatomy, and the rivet that once reinforced trunks becomes expression, keeping the animal character sophisticated rather than cartoonish.

This is a genuine hardsided piece, not a novelty bag: coated canvas, cowhide, reinforced corners, visible studs, gold-tone brass fittings, a structured lid and body and an S-lock-style closure with buckles give it the solidity of a miniature trunk. Gold-tone brass appears at the corners, studs, locking components and handle fittings, lending a refined vintage-travel character against the dark canvas and pale leather.

Inside, the whimsy gives way to precision. The interior, lined in dark microfiber and leather, holds three watches on removable cushions, with further storage suited to rings and small accessories; with the cushions removed it serves equally as a jewelry or valuables box. Closed, the case is a sculptural object; opened, a watch display. The elephant, traditionally associated with patience, memory and stability, becomes a guardian of time.
