Louis Vuitton's Monogram Multicolore era at its most exuberant: a white Multicolore bucket wrapped in a curtain of colored suede fringe, beads and rhinestones. The 2006 limited-edition M40109 is defined by movement, its strips swinging and recombining with every step.

The Piece

Created at the height of the house's early-2000s Multicolore period, this 2006 limited edition combines a white Monogram Multicolore body with natural cowhide leather, vivid suede fringe, multicolored beads, rhinestone embellishment and polished gold-tone hardware. Multicolore became one of the defining signatures of the Maison's collaboration with Takashi Murakami, turning the familiar initials and floral motifs into a vibrant field of color on a pale ground, and the M40109 represents its maximalist side: playful, decorative and deliberately extravagant.

The bag follows a compact vertical bucket silhouette, framed by a circular reinforced base and a structured upper leather section from which the handles rise. Between them hangs the defining feature, a curtain of long strips in saturated pink, turquoise, orange, yellow, green and purple, each differing slightly in color, length, ornament and termination. Some end in brightly colored cylindrical beads, others in small decorative elements or metal components, and smaller clusters and rhinestones punctuate the lower fringe; bead colors include red, yellow, green, blue, turquoise, pink, orange, white and black.

Natural cowhide gives the composition its discipline: the upper panel carries curved reinforcement shapes, rivets and stitching, and the base is wrapped in a broad leather band with decorative stitching. Like all untreated cowhide, it develops honey coloration, surface darkening, handling marks, fine wrinkles and localized patina over time. Inside, a contrasting lining holds one open pocket and one zippered pocket, and the vertical body offers more usable depth than its compact footprint suggests.

The twin adjustable shoulder handles extend the proportions while leaving the fringe unobstructed; the bag is made for shoulder carry and is best allowed to hang freely rather than pressed against other objects. Displayed upright it has real sculptural presence, its silhouette changing with the angle: layered fringe and leather from the front, the density of ornament in profile, the circular geometry from above.
