Vik Muniz turns the Capucines BB into a constellation: 154 embossed or inlaid leather motifs scattered across a white ground like a private visual vocabulary. Made in a worldwide edition of 200 for the ArtyCapucines project, the bag looks whimsical at first glance and proves exceptionally sophisticated in construction.

The Piece

Created for Louis Vuitton's ArtyCapucines project, in which contemporary artists were invited to reinterpret the Capucines through their own visual language, the M59650 transforms the House's refined silhouette into a dense field of miniature symbols, objects, animals and fragments of visual culture. Across the white leather, flowers, animals, shoes, spectacles, hearts, cocktails, tailoring and body forms, letters, abstract symbols and playful objects appear scattered; rather than one central graphic, the whole body becomes a constellation of small interventions.

Brazilian artist Vik Muniz is known for image-making that reinterprets familiar forms through unexpected materials, processes and visual reconstruction, and Louis Vuitton translated that spirit into leatherwork. The M59650 is associated with Muniz's Quasi Tutto visual language, its surface populated by 154 embossed or inlaid motifs executed with Louis Vuitton leather techniques. This is not a printed bag: each motif is physically built into the surface, with its own dimension, texture and slight variation in scale, color, orientation, shape and surface treatment, so the eye discovers individual figures rather than a continuous repeat.

Beneath the artwork stays the architecture of the Capucines BB: compact, structured proportions, a trapezoidal profile, a sculptural central top handle, flap construction, clean geometric sides, metal base feet, a removable shoulder strap and polished central LV hardware that serves as both closure and visual punctuation. That restraint keeps the exuberant surface legible, while the white leather acts as negative space, isolating each colorful element as if mounted on its own clean field and revealing every attachment, edge and transition. Inside, a zip pocket organizes an otherwise uncluttered compartment.

The Capucines takes its name from Rue Neuve-des-Capucines in Paris, where Louis Vuitton opened his first store in 1854; the modern Capucines was introduced in 2013 and soon became one of the House's most important structured handbag families. Its broad front panel and rigid leather make it an ideal canvas for the ArtyCapucines program, whose artist designs have been released in worldwide editions of 200 pieces each, placing the M59650 well outside normal seasonal output.

The bag can be carried by the top handle as a formal miniature handbag, or on the adjustable shoulder strap, over the shoulder or crossbody, with the artwork visible either way. Upright on display it behaves almost like a small sculptural panel: from a distance it reads white and colorful, at mid-range the symbols separate, and up close the leather inlay becomes the main attraction, a portable cabinet of curiosities. Quiet clothing in white, black, cream, clean denim or neutral tailoring lets it remain the principal visual object.
