Kutani Ware Hotei-sama Figure, Seven Gods of Fortune, Cobalt-Blue and Earth-Tone Enamel Ceramic, 30 cm

Hotei-sama, god of contentment, is modeled here in Kutani ware with an almost human realism: a rounded form, lively features, an easy posture and one arm raised to beckon good fortune. Cobalt-blue robes play against earthy body tones, and at an approachable 30 cm the figure suits a private collection or a welcoming shop interior.

The Piece

This Kutani ware Hotei-sama figure embodies one of Japan's most beloved symbols of prosperity and contentment. Executed as a fully sculptural ceramic work, it presents the deity with a joyful expression and a warm, benevolent presence.

Rather than an abstract representation, the figure embraces human realism: rounded form, expressive features and a relaxed posture make it feel welcoming and grounded, while the raised arm reinforces the symbolic invitation of good fortune. The surface is finished in rich Kutani enamels, deep cobalt-blue decoration on the garments set against warmer earth tones across the body, a balance of color and texture that reflects mature Kutani craftsmanship. The expressive facial detailing and confident hand-modeling suggest workshop-level skill rather than mass production.

Hotei is one of the Seven Gods of Fortune, revered as a symbol of happiness, generosity and contentment. Often shown smiling with an exposed belly, he represents spiritual wealth and the joy of living without excess or attachment, and figures like this one bring that warmth into private collections and commercial interiors alike.
