Wagara Japanese Souvenir Jacket with Monumental Sakura Tree Embroidery, Black Ivory Satin & Pale Jacquard Reverse

Description

A striking Japanese SCRIPT reversible sukajan souvenir jacket built around one of the most poetic motifs in Japanese art: a monumental sakura cherry blossom tree in full bloom.

The principal side uses a deep black satin body with ivory-cream sleeves, allowing the enormous embroidered tree trunk and dense clusters of pale pink blossoms to dominate the composition. The branches stretch across the chest, shoulders, sleeves, and back, creating the feeling that the entire jacket has become the surface of a Japanese screen painting.

Rather than relying on scattered floral motifs, this design commits to a full scenic concept. The sakura tree is treated as the central subject, with a richly textured brown trunk, large spreading branches, and masses of blossoms in soft pink and blush tones. The artwork feels organic and immersive, especially on the back where the full tree rises vertically through the black field.

The reverse is dramatically quieter, rendered in pale champagne, ivory, and blush satin with a subtle all-over woven scenic pattern and contrasting black patterned sleeves. This second side gives the jacket a more understated, refined personality while retaining the classic reversible sukajan silhouette.

Tagged Size M, this is a strong collectible for admirers of Japanese floral art, wagara, sakura symbolism, embroidered fashion, and reversible Yokosuka-style jackets.

Collector Introduction

Some sukajan place a motif on a jacket.

This one turns the jacket into the motif.

The entire composition is organized around the form of a single flowering cherry tree, with the trunk acting almost like the spine of the garment and the branches spreading outward across the body and shoulders. 🌸

That makes the design unusually architectural for a floral sukajan. The embroidery feels less decorative and more immersive, almost like wearing a fragment of a byobu folding screen or a seasonal Japanese painting.

The contrast between the dark scenic side and the pale, restrained reverse also gives the piece exceptional visual range.

Iconography

Sakura / Cherry Blossoms 桜

Sakura are among the most deeply symbolic flowers in Japanese culture.

They are associated with:

  • spring
  • renewal
  • beauty
  • transience
  • seasonal change
  • mono no aware
  • hanami flower-viewing tradition

The brief life of the blossom has made sakura one of Japan’s most enduring symbols of fleeting beauty.

On this jacket, the blossoms are not isolated decorations. They form an entire canopy, creating a sense of scale and atmosphere.

The Cherry Tree as a Complete Composition

The most distinctive aspect of this design is the full tree structure.

The large brown trunk rises vertically through the body and then divides into spreading branches, which carry dense pale pink flowers across:

  • chest
  • shoulders
  • sleeves
  • upper back
  • full rear body

The effect is closer to traditional Japanese pictorial composition than ordinary garment decoration.

Falling Petals

Small individual petals are scattered around the main branches.

These give the design movement and reinforce the idea of sakura at peak bloom, when petals begin drifting away in the wind.

This detail adds a subtle sense of time passing to the composition.

Style / Materials / Signatures

Black Sakura Tree Side

The principal side features:

  • Black satin body
  • Ivory / cream sleeves
  • Large embroidered sakura tree trunk
  • Dense pink cherry blossom embroidery
  • Branches extending across sleeves and shoulders
  • Falling petal details
  • Black-and-cream striped rib trim
  • Angled pocket openings
  • Full front zipper

The contrast between the black ground and soft pink blossoms is especially effective, giving the floral embroidery almost a luminous quality.

Front Design

The front is unusually ambitious for a sukajan.

Instead of small chest motifs, the tree itself rises across the entire body. The trunk cuts vertically through the center while blossom-heavy branches spread outward.

The front therefore already feels like a complete artwork rather than simply a lead-in to the back.

Back Design

The back provides the strongest visual statement.

The massive cherry tree dominates almost the entire surface, with the trunk rising from the lower hem and the crown of blossoms spreading widely across the shoulders and upper back.

This creates a strong sense of:

  • scale
  • balance
  • movement
  • seasonal atmosphere

The black field acts as negative space, making the blossoms and brown branches stand forward dramatically.

Pale Jacquard Reverse

The reverse side offers a completely different aesthetic.

Features include:

  • Pale champagne / ivory body
  • Soft blush undertones
  • Black patterned sleeves
  • Subtle all-over woven scenic textile
  • Pink and ivory ribbing
  • Minimal front decoration
  • Classic satin bomber appearance

The reverse feels elegant, quiet, and refined, making the jacket much easier to wear in situations where the fully embroidered side would be too visually dominant.

This duality is a major collector advantage.

Woven Reverse Pattern

The pale reverse appears to incorporate a subtle jacquard-style Japanese scenic pattern, creating texture without heavy contrast.

The black sleeves carry a denser woven pattern, which helps frame the otherwise pale body.

This makes the reverse side visually interesting even without large embroidery.

Period

This piece is characteristic of the modern Japanese sukajan revival era, when brands began revisiting postwar souvenir-jacket construction while expanding the design vocabulary into:

  • floral art
  • Japanese scenic imagery
  • kimono-inspired textile patterning
  • refined reversible compositions

The jacket is clearly rooted in traditional Yokosuka souvenir-jacket styling while using a much more decorative and art-driven concept.

Condition

Pre-owned collectible condition with visible vintage character.

From the photographs, the jacket shows normal age-related characteristics including:

  • natural wrinkling and storage creasing
  • light satin surface variation
  • some tonal variation on the pale reverse
  • normal signs of previous wear and handling

The embroidery remains visually strong and highly decorative.

Because this jacket is reversible, both sides should be reviewed when considering overall condition.

Please examine all photographs carefully before purchase.

Display / Why Collect

This jacket stands out because it replaces the usual sukajan bestiary with a single elegant botanical subject.

Its strengths include:

  • full sakura tree composition
  • extensive embroidery
  • visually dramatic black-and-pink contrast
  • reversible construction
  • understated pale jacquard alternative side
  • highly recognizable Japanese symbolism
  • Size M wearability
  • strong crossover appeal between streetwear and textile art

For collectors who already own tiger, dragon, koi, eagle, or warrior sukajan, this sakura-tree piece offers a completely different visual language.

It is especially suited to buyers interested in:

  • Japonisme
  • Japanese floral art
  • kimono-inspired design
  • sakura symbolism
  • wearable textile art
  • refined sukajan collecting
