The Royal Oak Reduced to Gold, Geometry, and Almost Nothing Else

Created with Matthew Williams and 1017 ALYX 9SM, this limited Royal Oak strips away almost every familiar dial convention and lets the architecture speak.

Solid 18K yellow gold runs from case to bracelet to dial. No hour indexes crowd the surface. No date interrupts the composition. Only three hands, two signatures, eight bezel screws, and the unmistakable silhouette of the Royal Oak remain.

Introduction

Some collaborations add.

This one subtracts.

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak x 1017 ALYX 9SM Ref. 15550BA.OO.1356BA.02 takes one of the most recognizable watches ever designed and removes almost everything that is not essential.

The Tapisserie pattern disappears.

Traditional hour markers disappear.

The date disappears.

What remains is a field of vertically satin-finished yellow gold framed by the Royal Oak’s octagonal architecture.

It is less decorative than a conventional Royal Oak, yet somehow more conspicuous.

Because once the distractions are gone, the gold has nowhere to hide.

Description

The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Ref. 15550BA.OO.1356BA.02 was created in collaboration with designer Matthew Williams and 1017 ALYX 9SM, translating the label’s highly disciplined industrial aesthetic into the architecture of the Royal Oak.

The watch is constructed extensively in 18K yellow gold, beginning with its 37mm case and continuing into the integrated bracelet.

The dimensions are beautifully restrained.

At approximately 37mm across and only 9.1mm thick, the watch avoids the oversized proportions associated with many modern luxury sports watches. Instead, it relies on material, finishing, and the unmistakable Royal Oak silhouette for presence.

The dial is where the collaboration becomes clearest.

Rather than using the Royal Oak’s traditional patterned surface, the reference features a vertically satin-finished yellow-gold dial.

The entire composition is deliberately sparse.

The Audemars Piguet signature appears toward the upper half of the dial, while the 1017 ALYX 9SM signature is positioned below the hands.

There are no conventional applied hour indexes.

Three yellow-gold Royal Oak hands provide hours, minutes, and central seconds, allowing the dial to remain almost uninterrupted.

The result is strikingly architectural.

The octagonal bezel and eight exposed screws become more visually important because so little competes with them.

The case flows directly into an integrated 18K yellow-gold bracelet, preserving one of the Royal Oak’s defining design principles: bracelet and watch head appear to have been conceived as a single object rather than assembled as separate components.

Inside is the Audemars Piguet Calibre 5909, a selfwinding mechanical movement developed for compact contemporary Royal Oak proportions.

The movement operates at 28,800 vibrations per hour, contains 29 jewels and 174 components, and offers approximately 60 hours of power reserve.

Through the sapphire exhibition caseback, the movement is complemented by a specially designed 22K yellow-gold winding rotor incorporating collaboration-specific detailing.

The watch was originally rated to approximately 50 meters of water resistance.

Production was limited to just 194 pieces worldwide, placing this reference among the significantly scarcer modern collaborative Royal Oaks.

This example presents in unworn condition and is accompanied by its dedicated presentation package, warranty documentation, and limited-edition certificate.

The ALYX Design Language

The attraction of this Royal Oak comes from what has been removed.

Traditional luxury watches often communicate complexity through additional information.

More counters.

More text.

More markers.

More decoration.

Matthew Williams approached the Royal Oak from the opposite direction.

The dial is reduced almost to abstraction.

A vertically brushed gold surface replaces the familiar Tapisserie texture. The hour indexes vanish. The date aperture is eliminated. Even the typography is kept intentionally spare.

This forces attention back toward proportion, finishing, and material.

The Royal Oak bezel suddenly feels larger.

The hands become more sculptural.

The bracelet appears to continue through the dial rather than stopping at the case.

The result is exceptionally coherent.

Limited Edition

Only 194 examples of Ref. 15550BA.OO.1356BA.02 were produced.

That production scale gives the reference a substantially different collector profile from regular-production Royal Oak models.

The collaboration also represents a specific moment in Audemars Piguet’s engagement with contemporary fashion and industrial design.

Rather than simply placing a designer logo onto an existing configuration, the collaboration materially altered the dial architecture and visual character of the watch.

That distinction gives the reference greater relevance as a genuine collaborative design object.

Condition Report

Case

The 18K yellow-gold case presents in unworn condition with the crisp geometry and finishing expected from a carefully preserved contemporary Royal Oak.

The alternating brushed and polished surfaces remain visually strong.

Bezel

The octagonal bezel retains excellent definition, with the eight exposed screw heads providing the familiar Royal Oak architectural rhythm.

Dial

The vertically satin-finished yellow-gold dial presents beautifully.

Its deliberately minimalist surface allows the AP and ALYX signatures, hands, and subtle changes in reflected light to become the primary visual details.

Crystal

The sapphire crystal presents clearly without distracting visible wear.

Bracelet

The integrated 18K yellow-gold bracelet presents in excellent unworn condition.

Its brushed surfaces, polished bevels, articulated links, and integrated AP clasp maintain the seamless visual continuity of the full-gold design.

Movement

The watch is powered by Audemars Piguet Calibre 5909 with approximately 60 hours of power reserve.

The movement is visible through the sapphire exhibition caseback together with the specially configured collaboration rotor.

Accessories

The watch is accompanied by its dedicated presentation case, warranty documentation, and limited-edition certificate.

Why Collectors Want This Piece

Scarcity is only part of the story.

The stronger argument is design.

There are many limited Royal Oaks whose rarity comes primarily from color, material, or production count.

This reference changes the visual grammar of the Royal Oak itself.

The absence of conventional indexes and date display turns the watch into something closer to an architectural object.

The monochromatic yellow-gold execution strengthens that effect.

Case, dial, bezel, bracelet, clasp, hands, and rotor all participate in the same visual language.

Then there is scale.

At 37mm, the watch avoids relying on size for drama.

The gold provides the weight.

The architecture provides the identity.

The restraint provides the surprise.

For collectors who already understand the traditional Royal Oak vocabulary, that reduction makes the reference particularly interesting.

Brand Heritage

Audemars Piguet was founded in Le Brassus in 1875 and remains one of Switzerland’s most important independent watch manufactures.

The Royal Oak arrived in 1972 and fundamentally altered expectations surrounding the luxury sports watch.

Its exposed screws, octagonal bezel, integrated bracelet, and emphasis on surface finishing created a new design category.

Decades later, the Royal Oak remains recognizable from across a room.

Collaborations such as the 1017 ALYX 9SM project demonstrate how resilient that original architecture has become.

The essential geometry can survive radical simplification without losing its identity.

If anything, removing the familiar details makes the underlying design even easier to see.

Shipping & International Delivery

This exceptionally high-value precious-metal mechanical watch will receive specialized preparation for international transit.

The integrated bracelet will be immobilized to prevent unnecessary contact with the case, while polished and satin-finished surfaces will receive non-abrasive protective separation.

The presentation case, certificate, and warranty documentation will be stabilized separately within reinforced outer packaging.

Tracked delivery, signature confirmation, and appropriate high-value transit protection are arranged according to destination and declared value.

Import duties, customs charges, and local taxes may apply depending on destination.
