In the Audemars Piguet Bamboo the bracelet itself becomes the architecture: rows of articulated yellow-gold cylinders, punctuated with factory-set diamonds, flowing into a compact case whose dial disappears beneath pavé. A vintage ladies' high-jewelry watch from one of the manufacture's most adventurous periods, accompanied by official AP service documentation.

The Piece

There are Audemars Piguet watches built around movements, others built around architecture, and watches where the bracelet itself becomes the architecture. The Bamboo belongs to the third category. Produced during one of the manufacture's most adventurous periods of jewelry-watch design, it transforms an integrated bracelet into a field of articulated 18K yellow-gold cylinders evoking segmented bamboo, and on this example the links are punctuated with brilliant-cut diamonds until the bracelet becomes less an attachment than a continuation of the watch. The diamond scintillation changes continuously as the bracelet bends around the wrist.

At its center sits a compact, softly angular case of approximately 20.4mm, an octagonal or cushion form surrounded by ridged gold detailing, framing a fully pavé-set diamond dial. There are no conventional hour markers: the applied AP monogram at twelve and slender gold hands float over rows of closely arranged diamonds, so that light becomes the dominant dial furniture. Tiny in dimension, the watch is not tiny in presence; it is closer to a diamond bracelet with a concealed horological center than to a conventional wristwatch.

The diamonds are documented as junsei, genuine Audemars Piguet factory setting. Bamboo executions varied considerably in gem treatment, with diamond dials, diamond-set cases, ruby indexes and diamond bracelet links in different configurations.

The watch is quartz, which is period-correct: quartz allowed Audemars Piguet to keep these high-jewelry watches compact while concentrating mass, craftsmanship and visual drama in the case and bracelet. At approximately 54.7g of gold, diamonds and movement, it has real physical substance at jewelry rather than sports-watch scale.

Contemporary knowledge of Audemars Piguet is dominated by the Royal Oak. During the late twentieth century, however, the manufacture repeatedly explored forms in which bracelet, case and dial became one uninterrupted design object, and the Bamboo shows that different AP: more intimate, more jewelry-driven, more sculptural, and in some respects considerably stranger.

Reference & Provenance

Audemars Piguet's own heritage archive records a Model 66192 Bamboo, sold in 1989, made in yellow gold and fitted with calibre 2508, the movement of that heritage example having been manufactured in 1983. A documented example of Ref. 66192BA, a 20mm yellow-gold quartz Bamboo with factory diamond dial and papers, provides a particularly close technical match to this watch.

The accompanying Audemars Piguet service document, dated January 21, 2013, records a battery replacement and repair/service freight charges, with Switzerland as origin of goods; the invoice total shown is ¥15,540 including freight and tax.
