Osamu Tezuka's Big X, the 1964 anime about a boy who inherits a wartime power he never chose, rarely reached toy shelves. This Showa-era Asakusa Toy speedboat puts the hero at the helm as a soft vinyl pilot head, with a hand crank that spins the rear propeller and lithography built to read like a graphic object at rest.
The Piece
The boat is a large-format character vehicle in lithographed tin plate, made by Asakusa Toy and fitted with a soft vinyl pilot head and a hand-crank mechanism: turn the handle and the rear screw rotates. It fuses mid-century toy modernism, with bold lithography, crisp geometry and display-first scale, with the Showa television and manga hero culture that surrounded Tezuka's work.
The profile is the classic Showa speed craft, a wide bow and tapered stern giving high visual stability. Deck graphics use bold, simplified iconography designed for legibility at distance, while twin rear fins with a lightning-bolt motif abstract speed and power. The soft vinyl head makes the piece half vehicle and half figure, bridging tin toy collecting with soft vinyl character culture, and the red hull wall against bright deck fields gives it a poster-like presence.
The hull is lithographed tin plate with rolled edges and folded seams; the fins and rear elements are tin lithographed panels, a high-risk area for bends where survival matters. The manual crank linkage is less failure-prone than a zenmai (spring) drive and is often preferred for display play, interactive without spring fatigue, its simple action easy to demonstrate.
Big X is one of the most misunderstood and historically important works of early Japanese animation. Created by Osamu Tezuka and adapted into an anime in 1964, it follows Akira, a boy who inherits Big X, a secret Nazi-developed chemical granting flight, super strength and near invulnerability. His father had been involved in wartime research, and the power is a burden passed down from an immoral past rather than a blessing. Unlike robots or aliens, Big X is pure human enhancement, and the story's themes of guilt, inheritance, militarism and ethical restraint were radical for a children's series of 1964.
Setting the hero in a speedboat is quintessentially Showa, turning the character into an emblem of modern leisure and kinetic progress. The object is at once a toy and a compact historical surface, a record of how Showa Japan packaged heroism as everyday motion.

Big X in Context
If Astro Boy is optimism and Tetsujin 28-go is raw postwar anxiety, Big X is Japan's first anime about responsibility for power. Astro Boy trusts benevolent science; in Big X technology is already tainted, and the question is whether it can ever be cleansed. Tetsujin 28-go keeps its weapon at a distance, a military robot under remote control; Big X places the weapon inside the body, with no cockpit and no distance, anticipating much later anime psychology. Ultraman offers an alien savior and organized defense; Big X predates that heroic clarity, its conflicts covert, morally gray and personal, closer to espionage than superheroics.
Visually the hero lacks the toyetic clarity of later characters, with no giant robot silhouette, transformation gimmick or exaggerated monster battles. His plain, almost uncomfortable design mirrors the story's refusal to glamorize power: he flies alone, often at night and in secrecy. The series underperformed commercially because it treated children as moral inheritors rather than dreamers, asking what happens when the sins of adults become their responsibility. That made it a historical hinge rather than a franchise engine, and its influence runs quietly through later burdened-hero archetypes, human-enhancement anxiety and ethical science fiction in which power is inherited, not chosen, proto-Evangelion thinking decades early, without the mecha.
- Early 1960s optimism, child and hope: Astro Boy
- Postwar anxiety, weaponized technology: Tetsujin 28-go
- Moral inheritance, human burden: Big X
- Late 1960s spectacle, giant savior: Ultraman
