Matsuhisa Sensei Japanese Bronze Nio Deva Kings Agyo and Ungyo, Temple Guardian Warrior Statue Pair

The Nio, protector warriors of the Buddhist temple gate, appear here in bronze as a complete pair attributed to Matsuhisa Sensei. Agyo with open mouth and Ungyo with mouth closed together voice the beginning and end of all things, the guardian pairing at the heart of Japanese temple iconography.

The Piece

Nio, the Deva Kings, traditionally stand at the guardian gate of Buddhist temples as fierce protectors of the sacred precinct. Agyo, open-mouthed, sounds the first syllable; Ungyo, closed-mouthed, the last; together they frame the passage into sacred space. This pair is cast in bronze and attributed by name to Matsuhisa Sensei.
