The Piece

The long black tailored coat is the cornerstone of Yohji Yamamoto's women's wardrobe, and this is a textbook example. Named on its tag as the W/CA Beaver Peaked Lapel Single B Jacket, code FJ-J69-111, it comes from the women's main line; we have not been able to date the season with certainty, so it is noted here as to be confirmed.

Beaver cloth is a heavily milled, brushed wool whose surface is raised and pressed until it takes on a soft, almost felted sheen; the addition of cashmere gives it a warmth and hand that ordinary coating lacks. The cut is long and lean, about 90 cm from the shoulder, with wide peaked lapels, a single button at the waist and a gently shaped back. A cupro lining lets it slide on easily over knitwear.

Size 2 is a Yohji women's medium, here with a 42 cm shoulder and 43 cm chest measured flat, so it fits close through the body as a coat-jacket should. Wear it with wide trousers and flat shoes for the full silhouette.

In very good condition with little sign of wear, it is the kind of coat that becomes the last one you need to buy.
