A collarless A-line coat in black boiled-look wool that turns inside out to reveal channel-quilted violet, two coats in one from the Yohji Yamamoto women's line.
The Piece
Yohji Yamamoto's women's collection has always treated the inside of a garment as seriously as the outside. This coat takes the idea literally: one face in his customary black, the other in a saturated violet, each fully finished so that either can be worn out.
The black side is 100% wool with a soft, textured surface, cut collarless with an asymmetric neckline, three buttons and wide, slightly shortened sleeves. Turned out, the violet side is rayon, channel-quilted horizontally across the back and vertically down the front with polyester padding, with patch pockets and the same button front. The silhouette widens gently from shoulder to hem.
The Yohji Yamamoto signature label is inside, size 2, made in Japan, with product code FL-C21-847; the season has not been confirmed.
It sits just below the knee and has a relaxed, slightly cocooned shape. The violet face is the warmer of the two, and wearing it out gives an unexpectedly bright Yamamoto. Worn black side out over wide trousers and flat shoes, it is the quiet, sculptural Yohji silhouette that has defined his women's line for four decades; turned, it becomes a padded winter coat with real warmth. Very few coats offer two such different moods in one garment.
