The Piece
Yohji Yamamoto's footwear has always borrowed from work and walking shoes and then quietened them. These Leather Soft Smooth Trekking Low Shoes, code HW-E08-769 from the autumn/winter 2026 Pour Homme collection, take the lacing and eyelets of a mountain boot and lower them onto a rounded, almost Derby-like last, so they read as dress shoes from a distance and as something tougher up close.
The upper is a supple, lightly grained black calf, cut with a plain vamp and minimal seaming. Lacing runs through flat eyelets low down and switches to blackened speed hooks towards the collar, in the manner of a climbing shoe. The sole is a thick, ribbed rubber unit with a slight wedge, stamped with the Yohji signature underfoot, and the insole carries the embossed signature and product code. Made in Japan.
They sit well under the long, wide hems that define the Pour Homme silhouette and add height without bulk. Size 4 corresponds to Pour Homme's larger sizing; outsole length is 32.5 cm, so compare against a pair you already wear.
Yohji's shoe workshops have long favoured soft, unlined-feeling leathers that mould to the foot after a few wears, and this pair follows suit. The calf takes a gentle, even crease rather than cracking, and the thick sole gives a cushioned step on city pavements.
Shoes from the current season rarely appear outside the boutiques in this state, and arrive complete with packaging.
