A sharply fitted black wool jacket from Yohji Yamamoto womenswear, with a two-row button front, peak lapels and hip pockets made of an open, fishnet-like mesh.
The Piece
Yohji Yamamoto is known for volume, yet his womenswear has always included jackets cut close to the body, where the precision of the tailoring becomes the point. This is one of them: a narrow, waisted jacket in black wool that borrows the discipline of a riding coat and then undoes it with a single unexpected material.
The front fastens with two rows of black buttons, set close and running from chest to hip. Peak lapels sit high, there is a welt pocket at the chest, and the body is shaped by long seams that draw in the waist and release over the hip. At the cuffs, metal snaps replace the usual buttons.
The pockets are the signature. Instead of cloth, they are made from an open knit mesh, so a glimpse of whatever is underneath shows through, a detail both utilitarian and slightly subversive.
The label style suggests an earlier period of the mainline womenswear; the season is not recorded, so we do not attribute it to a specific collection. It is fully lined in cupro and fits a slim size S. Worn over a fine knit or a white shirt, it is classic Yohji with a quiet twist.
