New, unworn bib overalls in black cotton drill, cut with a deep dropped rise and cropped, buttoned legs, Yohji Yamamoto's take on the work garment as sculpture.
The Piece
Workwear has run through Yohji Yamamoto's menswear for decades, from the early Pour Homme coveralls to the recent utility pieces. The M-Work Overall, carrying the B.S.C. designation and reference HL-D99-040, takes the farmer's dungaree and rebuilds it with the volume and drape of the house's trousers.
It is made from a sturdy cotton drill in black, dense enough to hold its shape yet soft from the first wear. The bib rises high at the front with a buttoned placket, crossed straps adjust at the back, and a broad yoke wraps the waist. Large bellows pockets sit on each thigh, with welt pockets at the seat.
The defining feature is the dropped rise: the seat falls low between the legs, so the overall moves like a sarouel, and the legs taper to a cropped length finished with button tabs at the ankle. Worn with the straps loose it hangs almost like a skirt; tightened, it becomes a cleaner, more architectural shape.
Over a white T-shirt it is simple and graphic, and under a long jacket only the cropped legs show. This example is new and unworn, a rare chance to own it from the start.
