Yohji Yamamoto monkey boots from Autumn/Winter 1998: black leather lace-to-toe work boots on a thick sole cut in the manner of a tyre tread, an early piece of the house's footwear.
The Piece
The late 1990s are a prized period for Yohji Yamamoto collectors, and the house's footwear from those years, made in small numbers, is rarely seen outside Japan. These boots date from Autumn/Winter 1998 and take the monkey boot, a lace-to-toe work boot associated with climbers and labourers, and give it Yamamoto's weight and severity.
The upper is smooth black leather with a cap toe, stitched heel counter and side panel, and a long run of eyelets and speed hooks that lace almost to the toe. The defining feature is the sole: a thick black rubber unit moulded with a broken, block-like tread in the manner of a tyre, giving the boots a planted, industrial stance. Inside, they are lined in tan leather with the Yohji Yamamoto signature on the insole.
They have been worn and show it honestly, with the leather softened and creased at the flex point and the lace tips frayed, yet the uppers remain in good order and the tread has plenty of life.
Tagged size 41, they measure about 30 cm along the outsole and 11 cm across, with a 4 cm heel. They suit a men's EU 41, roughly a UK 7 to 7.5 or US 8.
