Y-3 Wedge Sandal M22374, 'My Name Is Yohji' Speech-Bubble Platform, Black Leather Straps, White Sole, JP 23.5, Boxed

One of the most playful designs Y-3 ever made: a towering white wedge printed with a red speech bubble reading Hi and the words My Name Is Yohji, topped with crossed black leather straps.

The Piece

Y-3, the long partnership between Yohji Yamamoto and adidas, has always enjoyed a joke at its own expense, and the wedge sandal M22374 is perhaps the best example. The platform is shaped like a solid white block, and on its side a red cartoon speech bubble says Hi, with MY NAME IS YOHJI written beneath in hand-drawn capitals.

Above the sole, wide black leather straps cross over the foot and wrap the ankle, fastening with a buckle. The construction is sturdy, so despite the height the sandal holds the foot securely and is surprisingly wearable. The Y-3 logo is moulded into the strap and the footbed, and the black rubber outsole has a deep tread.

The wedge rises from about 5.8 cm at the toe to about 16.1 cm at the heel, giving dramatic height without a stiletto. The shape has become a cult object among Y-3 collectors and turns up only rarely.

This pair has only been tried on, and comes with its original box and dust bag. A sculptural, witty piece that works as well on a shelf as on the foot.
