The Piece

Y-3, the partnership between Yohji Yamamoto and adidas founded in 2002, has always treated sport and rest as part of the same wardrobe. Alongside its tracksuits and trainers, the label occasionally produces lounge pieces, and its bathrobe is one of the rarest of them, made in small numbers and seldom seen outside Japan and Europe.

This robe is cut from 100% cotton, with a velour face outside and soft looped terry inside, so it dries as well as it drapes. It has a generous hood, a shawl front, patch-free sides and a self belt through side loops. The back carries a large white Y-3 logo, the only branding apart from the woven Y-3 label at the neck. The production label reads HD3307 with an 11/21 date, and it was made in Turkey.

Tagged S but cut loose, it measures 55 cm across the shoulder and 99 cm long, so it falls to the knee on most wearers and suits a wide size range.

Lounge pieces from fashion houses are rarely kept; most are used until they wear out. A Y-3 robe in clean, wearable order is therefore an unusual find, equally at home as a gift, a piece of a Y-3 collection, or simply the most considered thing in a bathroom.
