WILDSIDE Yohji Yamamoto x Sapporo Black Label Bijinga Tee by Suzume Uchida, Red Print, Size S, Sealed

A sealed, unworn T-shirt from the 2024 three-way collaboration between WILDSIDE Yohji Yamamoto, Sapporo Black Label beer and painter Suzume Uchida, printed with a red bijinga beauty holding a glass of beer.

The Piece

WILDSIDE is the Yohji Yamamoto project that works with outside artists, brands and subcultures, and in April 2024 it joined Sapporo's Black Label beer and the painter Suzume Uchida for a small capsule of T-shirts. The release was limited and sold only until stock ran out, through the WILDSIDE stores and Sapporo's own shop.

Uchida's artwork draws on the bijinga beauty posters that Japanese beer companies commissioned in the early twentieth century: elegant women in fashionable dress, offering the viewer a drink. She redrew the idea in her own soft, contemporary style, with a bobbed modern girl in Taisho-era costume raising a glass of Black Label. In this version the woman wears red, her flapper headband and fringed dress set against a tall grey panel that runs down the front. The Sapporo star is printed at the back neck, and the WILDSIDE logo sits on both sleeves.

The shirt itself is a heavyweight cotton jersey in black, made in Japan, with a relaxed, slightly boxy fit and a ribbed crew neck. The print is large and fully coloured, so it works as a piece of wearable illustration.

It remains in the original sealed bag with the tag visible, which makes it as much a collector's object as a T-shirt. A small, very Japanese meeting of fashion, advertising history and contemporary painting.
