The leather biker trousers from Vetements' Spring/Summer 2016 collection, cut like racing leathers in black, cobalt and white with ribbed knee and waist panels, embossed Vera Pelle.
The Piece
Demna Gvasalia's Vetements changed fashion between 2015 and 2017 by taking ordinary garments, from DHL T-shirts to motorbike leathers, and recutting them with exaggerated proportions. Spring/Summer 2016, shown in a Paris gay club, put these racing-style leather trousers on the runway with a matching biker top, and they became one of the defining Vetements pieces of the period.
The trousers are made entirely of leather, in black at the high waist and lower legs, white sweeping up from the inner thigh, and cobalt blue through the legs and seat. They have ribbed stretch panels across the knees and the back waist, a front zip fly, two zipped hip pockets and an embossed Vera Pelle mark. The label inside reads Vetements Pour Femme, Cuir, Été 2016, Prêt-à-Porter.
Tagged S, the waist measures 70 cm with a 28 cm rise and a 92 cm outseam, close through the hip and straight below the knee, as on the runway.
Early Vetements runway leather is rarely offered, and many examples have been worn hard. These trousers retain their shape and colour, and remain a direct document of the moment when Vetements reset the direction of fashion.
