The Piece

Spring-summer 2018 was the season Raf Simons took his runway to New York’s Chinatown and opened the archive of Peter Saville, the graphic designer behind the record sleeves of Factory Records. Saville’s artwork for Joy Division and New Order was cut into patches, panels and woven labels and set onto oversized tailoring, parkas and denim, a meeting of two bodies of work that had shaped each other for decades. The boxy black trucker, model 181-723, became one of the defining pieces of that collection and remains among the most sought-after Raf Simons garments of the New York years.

This is the rose version, carrying Saville’s 1983 New Order sleeve for Power, Corruption & Lies on the back, the still life of roses by Henri Fantin-Latour. An RS patch sits on the chest, woven track-title labels run down the front and the sleeve, and the snap fastenings carry the house’s engraved hardware. The composition label reads 181-723-10031, 100% cotton.

Size S in this model is still enormous, at 65 cm across the shoulder and 87 cm pit to pit, and it wears as an oversized coat-jacket on most builds. The rose panel shows cracking and some lifting from wear, which gives it the look of a much-played record sleeve; it is priced with that in mind.

For collectors who prefer clothes with a visible history, the cracked rose panel is part of the appeal: the image has aged the way the original record sleeves have, softened by handling. Size S is the most worn and most traded size of this model, and this is a practical way into one of the best-known Raf Simons pieces.
