A collarless, knee-length laboratory coat in fleecy charcoal wool, marked with the RS-LAB NTWRP chest badge and an R. Simons Studenten label, believed to date from autumn-winter 2020.
The Piece
In 2019 Raf Simons returned to his own label full time and staged his collections under the banner RS-LAB, with lab coats, uniforms and invented institutional badges standing in for the classrooms and workshops of his Antwerp youth. The lab coat became a recurring silhouette over the following seasons, from cotton and denim to heavy winter wool.
This coat is cut long and straight with a deep V neckline and no collar, closing with four large pale buttons. A chest patch pocket carries the RS-LAB NTWRP badge, and an embroidered label reading R. Simons, Detlef BVBA, Studenten, Antwerp, Belgium nods to a fictional school register. The cloth is 100% wool with a dense, slightly shaggy charcoal surface flecked with grey. The model reference 202-635 points to autumn-winter 2020.
At 110.5 cm long it reaches below the knee, a clean column that layers over a hoodie or a roll-neck and swings open easily when worn unbuttoned.
The RS-LAB and Studenten badges are a small piece of Raf Simons storytelling, and they are what separate these lab coats from any other long wool coat. Worn buttoned with the V neck open, it has the calm authority of a uniform; worn loose, it becomes a dramatic, swinging overlayer for the colder months.
