Pleats Please Issey Miyake SS2019 Short-Sleeve Bell Dress, Painterly Multicolour Print, Size 3, Excellent Condition

A full, swinging short-sleeve dress from the Pleats Please spring 2019 season, printed edge to edge with brushstroke blocks of coral, cobalt, jade and ink black on permanently pleated polyester.

The Piece

Issey Miyake introduced Pleats Please in 1993 as a democratic answer to his runway pleating research: garments cut two and a half to three times oversize, sewn first and then pressed so the pleats are locked into the fibre. The result travels, washes and packs flat, and every season the house treats the cloth as a canvas for graphic printing. This dress is attributed to the Spring-Summer 2019 collection, a season that leaned towards loose, gestural, hand-painted motifs.

The cut is the line's rounded bell silhouette: cap sleeves, a simple jewel neck and a skirt that flares into a wide circle, so that the print opens out like a fan when you move. The artwork runs in vertical panels, so the front and back read differently; one side is dominated by black calligraphic strokes over turquoise and peach, the other by scattered black spots across orange, red and green.

On the body it hangs close at the shoulder and then floats. It is a dress that needs nothing but a flat shoe and perhaps a black turtleneck beneath in cooler months; the pleats hold their shape all day and never crease in a suitcase.
