The Piece

Combination is one of Mihara Yasuhiro’s favourite devices: two garments are cut and spliced into one so that the piece reads like a styling accident frozen in place. The combined jeans have become a signature of recent seasons, and they appear in the house runway shows in many variations.

Here a pair of olive cotton ripstop cargo shorts, complete with bellows pockets, flapped side pockets, a white QR care patch and the MMY tab, is layered directly over a pair of wide jeans. The denim beneath has been washed and over-dyed to a rusty, greenish cast with heavy whiskering at the knees, and the hems are finished raw. An elastic back waistband and button fly make the fit easy.

Worn, the effect is of shorts thrown over trousers, a layered silhouette that does the work of an outfit on its own. Pair it with a plain tee or knit and the Original Sole sneakers.
