A black canvas Original Sole high-top set on the glossy black version of the melted sole, EU 43, honestly worn with tread wear beneath.

The Piece

Mihara Yasuhiro trained at Tama Art University and began with footwear, which is why the shoe has always been the centre of his house. The Original Sole, modelled by hand in clay by the designer and then cast in rubber, keeps the slumped, melted contours of that first sculpture, so every pair looks as if a classic vulcanised sneaker had been left too close to the stove. Most pairs wear the sole in white; the black-dipped version is rarer and turns the shoe into a single dark silhouette.

This is the high-top cut, believed to be from the Peterson family, in black cotton canvas with white contrast stitching, white laces and the MMY tongue label. The sole and toe cap are finished in a high-shine black rubber that pools and folds around the foot, and the MMY heel stamp sits in relief at the back. The shaft stands about 12 cm tall.

Worn, it has the attitude of a vintage basketball boot reinterpreted as sculpture, and it is easier to wear than the white-soled version for anyone who prefers a tonal look. EU 43 corresponds to roughly JP 28 cm.

• Outsole tread worn through at the forefoot, with the black outer layer lifting and peeling from the tread in places (see outsole photographs).
