The Piece

Few Japanese designers treat distressing as carefully as Mihara Yasuhiro. The house’s shirts are faded, repaired and splashed by hand so that each one looks like a much-loved original that has passed through several owners, and the ‘Wearing Instructions’ label stitched inside reminds the wearer to ‘wear your way of life’.

Reference J15SH125 is a western shirt in black cotton denim, washed down to smoky grey at the yoke, chest and sleeves. Darker patchwork panels cover the shoulder and front pocket, the pointed western yokes and flap pockets are edged with silver-painted seams, and white paint flecks scatter across the front and sleeves. Snap fastenings, frayed holes at the hem and a curved shirt-tail complete it, along with the house’s QR modification label and MMY neck tab.

The cut is generous, with dropped shoulders and long sleeves, so it works as an overshirt over a tee or hoodie as easily as buttoned on its own.
