Louis Vuitton SS2019 Virgil Abloh Debut Plain Rainbow Jacquard Anorak with Wizard of Oz Patches, Size 44

A hooded anorak from Virgil Abloh's first Louis Vuitton collection, woven in a smudged rainbow jacquard and set with beaded patches quoting The Wizard of Oz.

The Piece

Virgil Abloh's debut for Louis Vuitton, shown in the gardens of the Palais-Royal in June 2018 for spring-summer 2019, opened with a palette that faded from white to a full spectrum of colour. Its central reference was The Wizard of Oz, a story of stepping from black and white into colour, which Abloh used as a metaphor for his own arrival in Paris.

This half-zip anorak belongs to that founding moment. The cloth is a polyester and cotton jacquard with a blurred, tie-dye effect in pink, cobalt, grey and acid green, and an interior label reads Plain Rainbow. On the front sit a beaded rectangular patch reading Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain and a circular beaded roundel with a Paris cathedral; the sleeves carry red woven badges, and the back is dominated by a large blue LV. Practical details include a fixed drawcord hood, a zipped kangaroo pocket, side zip pockets and elastic cuffs and hem. Lined in cotton.

Size 44 is cut roomy, with a deep raglan sleeve, so it wears like a modern pullover shell. Debut-collection pieces are the cornerstone of any Abloh archive.
