Kansai Profumo Patchwork Shirt by Choya, Mustard Cotton with Geometric Appliqué, 1980s

A plain mustard button-down until you reach the front: three jagged shapes in green, brown and orange stitched on like fragments of a stage set, from Kansai Yamamoto’s 1980s Profumo line.

The Piece

Kansai Profumo was one of the designer’s lines of the 1980s, and this shirt was made for it by Choya, the Japanese shirtmaker. The cotton is a dry mustard twill cut in the boxy silhouette of the decade, with a button-down collar, a centre box pleat at the back and the logo on the original buttons.

The appliqué is three angular pieces in dark green, brown and orange, placed off-centre on the chest and shoulder. Labelled Kansai Profumo at the neck with the Choya C-TK 0040 maker’s code; made in Japan.

Measured flat: shoulder 47 cm (18.5 in), chest 54 cm (21.3 in), sleeve 55 cm (21.7 in), length 70 cm (27.6 in); fits as a relaxed medium to large.
