A Junya Watanabe and Levi's womenswear trucker that balloons into a cocoon, its faded indigo panels pieced with raw frayed edges and its Levi Strauss shank buttons running straight down the front.
The Piece
Levi's and Junya Watanabe have collaborated for well over a decade, and the womenswear side of the partnership is where Watanabe takes the greatest liberties with the denim jacket. Each season he cuts apart genuine Levi's cloth and rebuilds the Type III trucker into a new silhouette.
This jacket, model JO-J202 with an AD2024 label, keeps the trucker's pointed collar, flap pockets and branded shank buttons, but its body and sleeves are reconstructed from several washes of denim. Pale, whiskered panels at the chest and back meet deeper indigo at the sides, the seams left raw so that white threads fringe each join. The sleeves are wide and rounded, gathering into fitted cuffs, so the whole jacket takes on a soft egg shape.
The fit is oversized by design. Even in XS it hangs generously from the shoulder and suits a slim knit, a slip dress or wide trousers.
Watanabe's Levi's pieces sell quickly in Tokyo and are far less common in good condition abroad. This one, double-labelled with the Levi's red batwing and the Junya Watanabe name, is a characteristic example of his denim sculpture.
