The Junya Watanabe custom of the Dr. Martens 1490 ten-eye boot, its black leather upper covered in spikes and cone studs, from an earlier edition of the collaboration (ref JP-K101).

The Piece

Junya Watanabe and Dr. Martens have a long history together, and the studded 1490 is the collaboration at its most uncompromising. It takes the British brand's ten-eyelet boot, the mid-height silhouette that sits between the 1460 and the tall 14-eye, and arms it, turning a punk staple into a piece of wearable sculpture.

Two kinds of hardware are set into the smooth black leather: long, sharp spikes along the quarters and back seam, and squat cone and flat-headed studs scattered across the toe and vamp. The classic details remain, including the yellow welt stitching, the black heel loop with its With Bouncing Soles lettering and the translucent amber AirWair sole. The tongue carries the Junya Watanabe name.

The heavy studding makes the boots a statement that changes any outfit. They are at their best with black trousers tucked in or cropped just above the shaft, or under a long skirt, letting the spikes catch the light.

Dr. Martens 1490 sizing runs close to true UK size; most wearers take their usual Dr. Martens size. This pair is marked US 8 (UK 7), with an outsole of about 27 cm.
