Junya Watanabe SS2003 Bondage Strap Parachute Overalls in Grey Stripe Wool Gabardine, Size S

One of the most sought-after constructions of Junya Watanabe’s spring-summer 2003 punk collection: wool gabardine parachute overalls wrapped in a harness of adjustable straps, buckles and D-rings.

The Piece

Spring-summer 2003 is remembered as the season Junya Watanabe set feminine fabrics against the hardware of punk and bondage clothing, borrowing the strapped trousers of seventies London and running them through Comme des Garçons pattern-cutting. The overalls were among the rarest pieces produced, and they surface very seldom.

Here a light grey wool gabardine, striped with a fine red and woven tone-on-tone line, forms a full parachute trouser with a shirred back waist. Over it runs a harness of grey cotton tape: padded shoulder straps joined by a chest strap and buckle, crossed straps around the hips, and buckled straps at the knee and hem. Each one adjusts, so the volume, the shirring and the drape can be set differently each time it is worn.

The hems can be rolled and held by the ankle straps, as photographed, or let down to full length. The shoulder harness can also be dropped and the waist belted, turning the piece into trousers. Product code JI-P034, made in Japan, with polyurethane foam padding in the shoulder straps.

A true collector’s garment from a defining Junya season, and as much an object to study as one to wear.
