Runway patchwork jeans from Junya Watanabe MAN AW2019, a customised Levi's 501 1954 model in selvedge denim, scattered with tartan, tweed, corduroy and leather patches.
The Piece
Junya Watanabe has worked with Levi's for years, but the AW2019 men's show used the partnership as a centrepiece. The collection presented the 501 as a canvas for the patching and mending of country clothing, and these jeans walked the runway styled with tailored tweed jackets.
The base is a Levi's 501 1954 model in cotton selvedge denim with a mid-blue fade. Across the front Junya applies patches of check wool, red and black plaid, grey tweed, brown corduroy, tan suede and silvered leather, cut in rounded and angular shapes like repairs accumulated over decades. The waistband is swapped for a darker denim, the back pockets are repositioned and outlined with darker indigo inlays, and the classic leather two-horse patch and red Tab are retained.
The care label carries WD-P204 and AD2019, and the jeans are made in Japan. They carry the joint red Levi's and Junya Watanabe MAN waistband label.
Tagged XS, they measure about 42 cm flat across the waist with a 29.5 cm rise and 68.5 cm inseam. The leg is slim and tapered, and the jeans suit a 30 to 31 inch waist.

- Excellent condition with only light wear.
- Slight scuffing and faint marking on one patch.
- No holes or loose patches.
- Selvedge and hems clean.

The labels, materials, stitching, hardware and construction are examined together and documented in Japan before dispatch; anything that cannot be confirmed is stated plainly in the description.
