Junya Watanabe AW2022 Runway Patchwork Biker Poncho Coat, Upcycled Military Cotton, Khaki Multi, Size XS

A floor-sweeping poncho coat from Junya Watanabe's Autumn/Winter 2022 collection, assembled from dozens of khaki, olive, sand and oxblood cotton panels around a zip-front biker jacket with belts, buckles and eyelets.

The Piece

Autumn/Winter 2022 was Junya Watanabe at his most constructive. The collection took the vocabulary of the biker jacket, the trench and military surplus and reassembled it into vast, sculptural silhouettes, many of them pieced together from patchwork panels in faded utility shades. The poncho coats were the show's signature, and this is one of them: the same rider-meets-cape construction seen on the runway.

At its core sits a cropped biker jacket with a wide notched collar, an asymmetric zip and a belted waist. From the shoulders a full circle of patchwork falls almost to the ankle. Each panel is a different cotton in khaki, moss, tan, stone and burgundy, joined with raw edges and top-stitching, and punctuated by working zips, flap pockets, metal eyelets and buckled straps that recall the details of the jacket it grew out of.

The coat carries the Junya Watanabe Comme des Garçons label, product code JJ-C025, dated AD2022, and is made in Japan. The label marks it size XS, but the cape cut means it is not really sized by the body: it drapes over the shoulders and swings freely, so it will suit a wide range of frames, and the length is the main consideration.

Worn, it moves like a cloak and reads from across a room. Over black knit and slim trousers with heavy boots it becomes the whole outfit, which is exactly how it was styled on the runway. For collectors of Junya's patchwork and upcycling work, the AW2022 ponchos are among the most complete statements of the idea.
