Parachute trousers from Issey Miyake's spring-summer 2008 Wind collection, the celebrated meeting of Dai Fujiwara and James Dyson, cut in a grey technical cloth with raspberry panels and jacquard engineering drawings.
The Piece
Shown in Paris in October 2007, the spring-summer 2008 Issey Miyake collection, titled Wind, was the result of a collaboration between creative director Dai Fujiwara and the inventor James Dyson. Fujiwara visited Dyson's engineers and came back fascinated by airflow; the show opened inside a wind tunnel-like set and the clothes billowed, inflated and trailed as the models walked. It remains one of the most discussed design collaborations of the 2000s and pieces rarely surface.
These parachute trousers carry the full language of the season. The grey cloth is woven with faint engineering line drawings, while raspberry-pink panels run down the legs and through the zipped cargo pockets at each hip. The legs are generously volumed and gather at the ankle with snap-fastened cuffs that trap air, exactly as the Wind brief intended, and the Dyson name appears in a small print near one ankle.
They wear high on the waist with a dropped, roomy seat and taper to the cuff, so they sit best with chunky trainers or boots. Collectors of the house treat Wind as a landmark, and a pair in wearable condition is a strong anchor for any Miyake archive.
