Issey Miyake Men AW1996 Parachute Cargo Bomber MA-1 with Detachable Cargo Layer and Hood, Black, Size M

The autumn-winter 1996 Parachute Cargo Bomber from Issey Miyake Men, a modular MA-1 whose zip-off harness of cargo pockets and stowable hood made it one of the most coveted archive jackets of the decade.

The Piece

Few Japanese archive pieces carry the reputation of the Issey Miyake Men Parachute Cargo Bomber. Shown for autumn-winter 1996, it took the American MA-1 and rebuilt it around parachute and survival equipment, layering a removable rig of pockets over the jacket so that it reads somewhere between flight gear and body armour. It has been worn and referenced by a generation of designers and appears regularly in archive features on 1990s menswear.

This example, style ME63-FC460, is the black version. The base is a classic padded nylon MA-1 with a knitted collar, cuffs and hem. Over it zips a cargo layer with a dense grid of bellows and flap pockets, navy panels and webbing across the chest and back, a large zipped pouch at the back and a sleeve utility pocket. A hood packs into the collar and can be drawn out, and with the cargo layer removed the jacket becomes a clean, roomy bomber, as the photographs show both ways.

In size M it wears boxy and full in the body with long sleeves, sitting just at the hip. It is a true archive centrepiece, and complete examples in black are seldom offered.

Condition

• Pre-owned, graded C for age-related wear; overall a good vintage example.
• Deterioration to the front zip-pull material and inside one pocket, not sticky (shown in the close-ups).
• Some coating wear at the base of several zip pulls; does not affect use.
• No large marks, tears or structural damage noted.
