Gianni Versace 1990s Medusa Coin Link Necklace, Gold Tone, 40.5 cm, with Original Box

A collar-length chain of small Medusa coins linked by gold-tone bars, presented in its black Gianni Versace box: the everyday expression of the house emblem, made for layering in the early 1990s.

The Piece

The Medusa coin is the most enduring idea in the Gianni Versace jewellery archive. Introduced in the years after the head of Medusa became the house emblem in 1978, it was struck in the manner of an ancient Greek drachma and repeated along chains, belts and cuffs until it became shorthand for the whole Versace world.

This necklace uses the coin at a refined scale. A continuous run of small round medallions, each stamped with the Medusa in relief, alternates with short rectangular bars and round jump rings, giving the chain a supple, almost fabric-like drape on the collarbone. It fastens with a fold-over box clasp at the back.

At 40.5 cm it sits as a close collar on most necks, which is how it was styled at the time, under an open shirt or above a black knit. It also pairs naturally with the coin bracelets and belts from the same period, and it comes in a black Gianni Versace presentation box with the gold Medusa printed on the lid.
