Studded armour chaps from Comme des Garçons Autumn/Winter 2016, the collection Rei Kawakubo titled 18th-Century Punk, with segmented black faux-leather plates hung from a strapped harness waist.
The Piece
Rei Kawakubo's Autumn/Winter 2016 show imagined what punk might have looked like in the eighteenth century, combining powdered-wig volume and court silhouettes with straps, studs and protective plating. The armour pieces from that season, worn over or in place of trousers, became some of its most discussed looks and remain among the most collectable Comme des Garçons garments of the decade.
These chaps are made of heavy black faux leather in overlapping, curved plates riveted with silver studs, each leg built like a piece of articulated armour. They hang from a waistband of open straps, adjustable across three settings, and the back panel of each leg is lined in black. The Comme des Garçons label in gold, Made in Japan, is stitched at the waistband. One of the photographs shows the same design walked in pink on the runway, for reference.
Tagged S, the waist adjusts to 78, 82 or 86 cm, with an 81 cm outseam. Worn over trousers or a skirt, they can be styled in many ways.
Rei Kawakubo's runway garments are made in very small numbers, and the armour pieces from this season are some of the most sculptural she has produced. They work as wearable objects as much as clothing, and deserve a place in any serious Comme des Garçons collection.
