From John Galliano’s Autumn 2010 Christian Dior collection: a chunky ivory wool knit coat threaded with braids and bows of pale blue silk satin ribbon, wrapped with a ribbon sash, size XS.
The Piece
Autumn 2010 was among the last ready-to-wear collections John Galliano made for Christian Dior before his departure in early 2011, and the knitwear from that season is now some of the most sought-after of his tenure. This coat, reference 0H24811AM545, was shown in the runway collection and has become a collector piece in its own right.
It is hand-knit in a heavy ivory wool, worked in an all-over basket stitch with ribbed borders. Through it run columns of pale blue silk satin ribbon, woven in and out of the knit like braided hair, finished in loose bows at the sleeves and hem. A wide shawl collar folds back over the shoulders, the sleeves are cut short and full, and the coat wraps and ties at the waist with a matching ribbon sash.
Made in Italy, it is 100% wool with 100% silk ribbon. The size XS measures about 41 cm pit to pit and 53 cm from neck to cuff, though the generous knit and wrap front give it a relaxed, enveloping shape.
It is pure Galliano romance: part fisherman’s knit, part eighteenth-century ribbon work, and wholly Dior. Pieces like this are rarely worn hard, and this one remains in very good order.
